Footage released of Egypt church blast

Film footage has been released from inside a Christian church in Egypt of the moment a bomb attack left at least 21 people dead.

More than 70 others were injured in the suspected suicide blast in the northern city of Alexandria as they ushered in the New Year.

The powerful bomb exploded in front of the church.

Suspicion has fallen on al Qaeda-linked terrorists from outside Egypt but, for the moment, no group has come forward.

Mohamed Nour El Din, a former assistant to Egypt’s Interior Minister, said: “It is too early to identify the perpetrators, especially as the crime scene investigation experts have just finished collecting what is left from the attack.’‘

Immediately after the blast, Christian protesters clashed with Muslims and police in the city.

Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak has called for unity, fearful the attack could destabilise Egypt’s already tense sectarian divisions.

His US counterpart Barack Obama described the bombing as a ‘‘barbaric and heinous act’‘.
